Did a Jeddah yesterday to be told by the dispatchers about the Air France 330 that went down over the South Atlantic. I was in that part of the world not two weeks back and remember how difficult it was to get hold of the controllers on the HF radios.
Sometimes it is easy to forget that the job has inherent risks and things can go wrong very fast.
I flew the larger type of this aircraft the -300 series with MAS more than 10 years ago. A nice aircraft, but did not take the turbulence well. I remember Faiz telling me how they take extra effort to avoid the weather on the Indian routes.
